Paintings in focus

The links on this page open up articles in which I give some background information about particular paintings, such as the artworks depicted in them, and some of my thoughts about the picture's meaning. The ideas are not meant to be definitive in any sense: the view of the artist who painted a work is only one among many possible perspectives.

My works are not depictions of an idea: I may start off with a concept in my mind, but often it is more like a vague feeling that becomes clearer once the picture is under way. The sense I have of its meaning changes through the act of painting, and continues to develop even after the picture is finished. The titles themselves can arise before, during or after the creation of the actual work.

I like to create images that are open-ended, so that each viewer can respond in their own way and create their own personal interpretation. I hope that you will enjoy reading some of my thoughts - and coming up with some ideas of your own.
